We are thrilled to kick off 2023 with one of the best teen films of the ‘90s, newly remastered. In small-town Åmål, shy high school student Agnes has a crush on impulsive popular blonde Elin, who would seem to be out of her league. But on Agnes’s birthday, a series of furtive encounters between the two girls leads to an unexpected romance. The debut feature of 28-year-old Swedish director Lukas Moodysson (Lilja-4-Ever), Fucking Åmål was widely hailed for its authentic portrayal of teen relationships on film, not least for its positive and nuanced look at queer coming-of-age, with infectious naturalistic performances from then-newcomers Rebecca Liljeberg and Alexandra Dahlström. Set to a brilliant Euro-house and alternative rock soundtrack—and counting none other than Ingmar Bergman among its admirers—the film remains as fresh today as it did over twenty years ago. In Swedish with English subtitles.
Special thanks to Bret Berg (AGFA) and Greg Sheppard.
